X-ray bone densitometers are used to determine a patient’s bone quality; assisting the doctor in diagnosis and management of diseases such as osteoporosis.
In 1997, through development with EI Detection & Imaging Systems, the world leader in bone mineral densitometry (BMD), introduced the first CZT based revolutionary duel energy x-ray densitometer. In 2005, a second generation X-ray BMD scanner was introduced using EI’s pixelated CZT detectors.
Bone densitometry uses an ultra-stable dual-energy X-ray source to quantify small changes, ~1%, in a patient's bone mineral density. This application requires an X-ray photon energy discriminating sensor that has high efficiency, high energy resolution, high count rate performance and exceptional long-term stability to enable Dual Energy X-ray Absorptometry (DEXA). This successful application of CZT has revolutionalized bone densitometry system, outselling competitive products 2:1. There are now thousands of our CZT-based BMD systems in clinical use attesting to the performance and reliability of our CZT detectors.
